Austria’s grip of persistent frost is loosening. After days of bitter cold, temperatures across the country are expected to rise noticeably in the coming week. According to forecasts from Geosphere Austria, the nation will see milder conditions with highs reaching up to eight degrees Celsius. However, a developing low-pressure system over Italy is poised to bring new precipitation by midweek — and with it, a renewed risk of icy conditions in some regions.
A Milder Start to the Week
Monday begins under thick cloud cover across much of the country. Remaining showers taper off during the afternoon, and skies brighten in northern regions. Winds blow lightly to moderately from the west. Morning temperatures range from –8 to 0°C, with daytime highs between 2 and 6°C.
Sunshine Before the Next Front
Under the influence of a brief high-pressure system, Tuesday starts sunny nationwide. Only isolated fog or low stratus clouds linger in some valleys. From the west, however, dense clouds associated with the next weather front approach later in the day, though conditions remain dry for the time being. Light to moderate southerly winds accompany temperatures from –9 to +1°C in the morning and 3 to 7°C in the afternoon — slightly higher in föhn‑affected areas.
Midweek Brings Ice Risk
On Wednesday, a southerly upper‑level flow pushes moist air against the southern Alps. Rain and snow set in early and intensify throughout the day. Snow levels rise to between 800 and 1,000 meters, but in lower elevations, freezing rain and black ice are possible. Elsewhere, the day begins with some sunshine, though fog and low clouds persist in northern and eastern lowlands. As the day progresses, cloud cover thickens from the south, and by evening, precipitation spreads widely. Strong southerly föhn winds blow in the mountains before easing later; in the lowlands, winds shift to a moderate east to southeast flow. Temperatures range from –8 to +2°C in the morning and 0 to 8°C during the day, depending on fog, sunshine, and wind.
Gradual Improvement from the West
By Thursday, western Austria sees rapid clearing as leftover clouds dissipate and sunshine returns. Elsewhere, rain and snow remain widespread in the morning, with snow levels between 300 and 800 meters. Conditions improve gradually from west to east, though the far east stays grey and wet longer. Winds remain mostly light, except for a moderate westerly breeze in the east. Morning temperatures sit between –3 and +2°C, with highs of 2 to 7°C.
Fog Pockets and Bright Spells
Friday brings a mix of lingering fog or low clouds in the lowlands and passing cloud bands from the west. Many regions still enjoy at least occasional sunshine. Winds stay weak throughout the day. Temperatures range from –7 to +1°C in the morning and reach 2 to 5°C in the afternoon.
